Case study · Built from scratch

StatRankings

An NFL & NBA statistics platform built from a blank repository to compete against established players — fast, stable, and cheap to run.

  • <300msAPI responses
  • 400+stats per game
  • <$600/modev + production on AWS

Where they started

StatRankings entered a market where the incumbents had years of head start and deep archives. For a new entrant, the bar was unforgiving: the data had to be deeper, the site had to be faster, and it could not go down on a game day — the exact moment traffic peaks.

There was no legacy system here. This was a build from scratch, which meant every architectural decision was ours to get right the first time.

What we built

  • A statistics platform covering 26 years of NFL & NBA data, with 400+ statistics per game.
  • An API designed for the read-heavy access pattern of stats browsing — responses under 300ms.
  • Site loads under 2 seconds, held through peak game days.
  • Infrastructure sized to reality: development and production environments together run under $600/month on AWS.

The cost figure is not a footnote. Early-stage products die from burn as often as from downtime. An architecture that stays fast at that price is the same discipline that keeps it fast at scale.

300ms game days → traffic api response — flat under load
peaks in traffic, not in latency

Building something new against incumbents?

The first version can be built on architecture that survives the next stage. Ours are.
